I want to “lay the 60’s” to rest…..It was a product of time, and place, YOU HAD TO BE THERE to fully understand what went down and why.
There was a “something” in the air (AND maybe the water) that doesn’t completely confirm to connecting the dot’s .
What went down on the tone of the 60’s was running parallel to all the nonsense of the Dead and the Counter Culture. They were tow separate streams of history. It’s the reason why the Dead for the most part is not relevant in the 2000’s and beyond.
The Dead has been replaced by the LA BAND Los Lobos. They have the cult following of the Dead, and they don’t suck.

John, the Dead were a CIA operation. It has nothing to do with being there. Yes, understanding the Dead and the operation is entirely relevant to freeing people today, as they’re still one of the largest / most played bands out there.

Little bit of info: In 1997 (?) Janes Addiction threw a rave at Bill Graham Civic Center in San Francisco called the Ennit Festival. Or something like that. Ennit or Enit. Back then raves had different themed rooms. One of the rooms was called the Time Zone or something and it was hosted by Ken Kesey and the Merry Pranksters. It was an actual Acid Test or at least a reproduction of an Acid Test. The room was mic’d and wired for sound. Mesmermizing visuals and multiphonic audio. The Pranksters were definitely dosed. Anyway, Kesey takes the stage and starts the acid mind meld and begins telling stories about The Movie while projecting The Movie on a screen. Kesey is rapping about this and that when he starts in about the Black Bus. Low and behold who comes dancing onto the screen? None other than Charlie Manson. Kesey rapped a little about how Manson and his Black Bus will go away and come again. He will go away and come again… Anyway, point is: Ding Ding! Manson was a participant in some of the early Acid Tests. My memory says it was the SF State Acid Test. There is documented footage in The Movie of Manson freak dancing at an Acid Test! I haven’t seen that information in books. Though I haven’t read too much about Manson. And perhaps The Pranksters, like the Beach Boys, weren’t exactly eager to claim the connection.

Jan: not so convince that the rambling’s of what Lenin called the “useful idiots” qualify as a CIA operation. The Agency wouldn’t want to get too close to being hung out as fronting the Dead, even though they have a policy of not confirming or denying anything.
Despite Bob Weir’s and Garcia’s stepping up to the plate to gain credibility as major player’s, I would put them in the same category as Leary’s acid drenched ramblings, hardly credible enough to be considered a “trusted asset”.
Unfortunately there isn’t any documentation that I’ve ever seen that they were on board with the Agency . Peddlers of Counter-Culture Nonsense, yes. Running with the Big Dogs….need to see the hard proof to get on board with that.

John, Why wouldn’t the most powerful agency/$$$ NOT want to get close to anything that moves people? Leary is definately an agent. So if you put “them: in the same category they are/were agents. I am just hoping they were hypnotized into it.

Marie: I would classify them as “fellow travelers” of a sort. I’m sure that the Counter Culture and the Agencies have intersected from time to time for what ever reason. The Dead had a very successful business model, and it might have been a question of who was using who. I think that they were having some fun with everyone at our expense. Another intelligence term that comes to mind for me is” limited modified hangout”.
There is just enough data put out to muddy the water to the point that there is enough showing to raise the issue of plausible deniability. The Dead and their ilk may been “cutout’s”, there is no way for sure to tie this to the Agency.
Do you think that you could bring the issue to a Court of Law and and get a judgement that they were a definitive CIA asset ?
As for Leary, he would have been more of a liability to bring on board than as an asset. His ACID drenched Psycho babel is largely look on as nonsense in today’s context. At the time, he was news worthy. The period of the 60’s and forward was a creature of Time and Place as far as I’m concerned. I lived through that period AND was in the San Francisco scene until the 70’s.
Have you ever tried to describe an event only to never fully be able to convey just went down ?
