There is another aspect that Steve didn’t mention that may have an impact: The export of the American Biker Culture and the rise of 1% MC ‘s and the ex-patriots that are living in these parts of the world who are bringing with them the American Culture of R&R. This is most prevalent in the Philippines and the out of control Drug scene.
I have been in contact with some of the ex-pats in that part of the world, and the export has been going on for years on that level. May be more hidden level’s, but this is the most obvious….
One other comment on Han’s observations: I think that there is less a mystical connotation to all this.
This export of the Classic R&R culture wouldn’t or couldn’t survive in the Asian cultures WITHOUT THE PRESENCE of an American ex-pat subculture that exist’s particularly in SE arena. This was set up after the Vietnam War as different sub-cultures set up shop in these countries. Some of the countries have lost their ethnic base and are almost non-distinguishable from any West Coast post 60’s and 70’s alternative scene.
This may be Stage 2 New America exported to Asia. Europe is already lost, Asia is the New Frontier. The forces behind this are generational in thinking….
